Swearing-in of PUCSC office-bearers: Sukhbir announces a grant of Rs 3 cr to Panjab University

Elaborating on the measures being contemplated for the welfare of the students’ community, the Deputy Chief Minister said, “The Punjab government will provide two shuttle buses for helping the students commute from one campus of PU to the other. We will establish a world-class gymnasium for the girl students, and will also bear the cost of installation of a solar water heating system in all PU hostels.”

In addition to this, he said that the state government would provide funds to the varsity for the installation of washing machines in all hostels, and would also help in setting up a health centre near the girls’ hostels.

Sukhbir congratulated the alliance comprising SOI, Indian National Students’ Organisation, Himachal Students’ Union and National Students’ Organisation on sweeping the PU student elections this year.

The Panjab University authorities have taken up the issue of release of grants with the Punjab government time and again. According to an official of the varsity, the Punjab government is required to pay 40 per cent share in funds to PU which amounts to around Rs 120 crore. However, the Punjab government has fixed Rs 20 crore as the amount. Of this, too, the entire amount is not paid. This year till now around Rs 4 crore has been paid.

On Thursday, SOI’s Jasmeen Kang took oath as the president of PUCSC while Preeti Negi from HIMSU took oath as the council’s vice-president. NSO’s Rishi Bhardwaj was sworn in as the secretary of the students’ council, with INSO’s Swati Tiwana as its joint secretary. The oath of office was administered by Dean Students’ Welfare (Women) Nandita Shukla.

Dean University Instructions A K Bhandari, Dean Students’ Welfare Navdeep Goyal, Registrar Col (Retd) Guljit Singh Chaddha, SOI national coordinator Parambans Singh Bunty Romana and national president of INSO Digvijay Chautala were also present during the oath-taking ceremony.
