Schengen Gone? France Ready to Reinstate Border Control Amid Refugee Crisis
ULAN BATOR (Sputnik), Svetlana Alexandrova – Delegates of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe Parliamentary Assembly (OSCE PA) back the creation of an international conference to address the migrant crisis, the head of Spain’s delegation told Sputnik on Thursday.

"It could be under the umbrella of the United Nations or the European Union or the Council of Europe," Ignacio Sanchez Amor said.

The European People’s Party group (EPP) and the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats drafted separate statements on Wednesday, but Sanchez Amor said both European Parliament factions worked throughout the morning to issue a joint announcement.

The joint statement seen by Sputnik reiterates lawmaker support for the creation of an International Conference on the migrant crisis. A migrant humanitarian crisis conference was proposed in the context of coordinated international efforts, which OSCE contributes its long experience in crisis management.

The proposal addresses the need to set up legal and safe travel corridors, humanitarian visas, settlement programs and safe return protocols.

Reiterating a "commitment with the international obligations stemming from the treaties dealing with the reception of refugees from crisis areas," the document is addressing fundamental issues regarding the urgent needs of at-risk refugees seeking asylum in Europe.

In the statement lawmakers express regret that the current crisis has been used as an expression for xenophobic prejudice by extremist groups seeking violence toward asylum seekers.

Over half a million people have fled their countries of origin in North Africa and the Middle East this year in search of refuge on European soil, according to the EU external border control agency Frontex.

Nearly 200 parliamentarians from 57 countries gathered in the Mongolian capital of Ulan Bator on September 16-18 for the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly’s 2015 Autumn Meeting.
