A teenager and his friend were arrested by Malabar Hill Police for allegedly extorting money from the teenager's girlfriend after claiming that he would expose their affair. The victim, a minor, used to pilfer ornaments from her residence and give it to the accused and her friends. The incident came to light recently after the victim's mother learnt that ornaments from the house were missing. She confronted her daughter, who narrated her ordeal.

The arrested persons have been identified as Aniruddha Arvind Pawar, 19, and his friend Nikesh Shigwan. Another accomplice is at large.

According to the police, the complainant is the victim's mother, a resident of Walkeshwar in Malabar Hill. The 16-year old victim is a student of first-year junior college. Her father works in Muscat. From Muscat, he used to send money to the complainant, who saved part of it and also had ornaments made.

"In 2012, the victim and Pawar studied in a Walkeshwar-based school and became good friends. Pawar had also proposed to the victim. Recently, when Pawar was in need of some money, he told the victim to help him. When the victim showed reluctance, Pawar told her he would tell her mother and relatives about their relationship," said an officer from Malabar Hill police station.

Frightened, the victim had no choice but to pilfer ornaments from her house and hand them over to Pawar and his friends as demanded. "On different occasions, the victim had given ornaments worth Rs 6.43 lakh to them. On August 29, the victim's mother had gone to Pune for some work and on returning she realised that her ornaments were missing," said the officer,

A complaint was lodged under sections 380 (punishment for theft), 384 (extortion), 385 (putting person in fear of injury in order to commit extortion) and 34 (common intention) of the Indian Penal Code.

"Based on the complaint we nabbed Pawar and Shigwan and are on the lookout for one more accomplice. We are also yet to recover the extorted property from them," the officer added.
