SHABQADAR: At least two peace committee members were killed in a targeted attack in Dawizai area of Pandyali tehsil in lower Mohmand Agency on Friday.

An official of the political administration told The Express Tribune that Nawab Khan and Afzal Khan, who were members of peace committee, were killed when an improvised explosive device went off.

“The device was planted on a roadside,” he said. “The victims belonged to Inzai Miangan village of Dawizai area. They were riding a motorcycle when the blast occurred.”

Later, the area was cordoned off and peace committee members and security force personnel conducted a search operation. However, no arrests were made. No militant outfit has claimed responsibility for the incident.

The Dawizai peace committee was set up after Operation Brekhna drew to a close in 2011. The region was dotted with militant hideouts. As a result, the committee and security forces played a vital role in restoring peace and stability.

Earlier this year, all peace committees working in Mohmand Agency were banned by the political administration. Moreover, the members were also subjected to maltreatment and were accused of misconduct.

Nevertheless, peace committee members still find themselves in the line of fire. A large number of them have been attacked militant outfits in recent months.
