Bystanders rescue woman when SUV flips, catches fire

Bystanders helped save a woman in Smithfield, R.I., after she became trapped when a sport utility vehicle she was driving hit a pickup truck, flipped, and caught fire, authorities said. Police said they are investigating what caused Wednesday afternoon's crash on Interstate 295. Investigators said Debra White, 61, of North Providence, was in the breakdown lane in her SUV when she suddenly veered left and cut across several lanes of traffic. The driver of the pickup was not harmed but the flames from White's SUV spread to the surrounding brush and trees. Several witnesses pulled her to safety and she was taken to Rhode Island Hospital. WPRI-TV reported White was in stable condition on Thursday.
