Debajyoti Mishra to make acting debut!
Composer Debajyoti Mishra is making his acting debut in a docu-fiction project that critically examines the legacy of Bengal's Left regime and will also draw upon his association with veteran Left-leaning composer, Salil Chowdhury .
Debajyoti had spent years with Salil, imbibing his philosophy, politics and musical traits and he always talks about how profound the experience was.

When Avisek Dutta, the director, approached me with this project, my first question was, 'Why me?' But he explained that the role demands a person with my background and character, and I also physically happen to match the character he had in his mind, said Debajyoti. The other main role -that of a mass media student who is working on the Left legacy in Bengal -is slated to star Sohini Sarkar.
The story deals with the life of a middle-aged man, who was once a party functionary , but was expelled over certain differences with the regime. The temporal backdrop of the story is the period just before the change in government. This man, to be played by Debajyoti, has turned into a recluse.
He has no friends, is an alcoholic and has major health issues. At this time, a young girl, who is doing a thesis on the Left's three-decade rule in Bengal, gets in touch with him. The man rebuffs her at first, but then, over many meetings, slowly starts opening up to her. Through their interactions, the entire history of the Left rule and its many implications -land reforms, industrial policy , regimented treatment of party functionaries -are examined. The film is titled
Diganta.
When my character meets this girl, he is in a hospital because of his illness. He refuses to speak about his past at first, but then, when he opens up to her later, he realizes that he is slowly rediscovering his passion for life. She manages to bring him out of his shell, added Debajyoti. Is there a romance between the two, we ask Avisek. There is a special bond that develops between them, but it is not linear and predictable like the stuff you generally see in most films, said the director, who will debut on the big screen with this film. Avisek, who has done a lot of threatre, tells us that he himself was attached to a Left party but had to leave because of ideological differences. Debuda has years of experience and is also very grounded. His association with Salil Chowdhury has given him a unique insight into the functioning of the Left. He is just perfect for this role, he added.
Sohini confirmed that she had been approached for the role. It is an interesting concept and story , but I'm still waiting to read the script, she told us.
