Tu Chor Main Sipahi –

We start with his initial days and skip some until his first hit movie ‘Main Khiladi Tu Anari’ that released in the year 1994. Until then, Akshay was testing waters in the industry and finding a foothold, so by the time ‘MKTA’ came, he was intelligent enough to make sane decisions. And that drives us to wonder what made him choose a script like ‘Tu Chor Main Sipahi’?

Yes, his pair with Saif Ali Khan in ‘Yeh Dillagi’ and ‘Main Khiladi Tu Anari’ became popular then, but that doesn’t mean he would choose every movie that had him. That’s just not ‘Safe’.

Mr and Mrs Khiladi –

The ‘Khiladi’ series had become popular back in the 1990s and that gave him nicknam Bollywood’s ‘Khiladi’. But again, that doesn’t mean, he should have done every movie that had ‘Khiladi’ in its title. ‘Abb Kya Bachche Ki Jaan Logey?’

International Khiladi –

Another movie in the ‘Khiladi’ series was ‘International Khiladi’ and it was cruel. A brother, sister, business tycoon, and a man in love. Too many characters, too many plots, and the movie lost its plot, though the aircraft stunts that Akshay did himself were strikingly beautiful.

Dushman: Ek Anokhi Kahaani –

True to the name, the ‘kahaani’ of the movie was actually ‘anokhi’. Akshay did leave an impact in this multi-starrer, but the movie tanked, simply because it deserved to.

Talaash: The Hunt Begins, Tashan, Kambakhht Ishq –

And we are still “hunt”ing for reasons as to why a magical pair like Akshay and Kareena Kapoor, who weaved magic with the 2004 ‘Aitraaz’, would do movies like these? And more so, why would filmmakers offer them roles which are so not meant for them?

‘Tashan’ and ‘Kambakhht Ishq’, especially, had critics, far and wide, finding some serious issues with them. The storyline, script, punchline etc. nothing seemed in place.

Chandni Chowk To China –

Akshay Kumar was a chef before he ventured into movies and has struggled his way to the top. There’s no denying to his talent, but when he reprised his earlier life avatar on the big screen, he failed miserably. Now we can’t really comment on the taste of the food he made in the movie, but the taste the movie left after it finished was bitter.

Action Replayy –

Akshay got together with his ‘Khakee’ co-star Aishwarya Rai in a time-travel comedy. The script looked brilliant, but on paper. It failed due to the dull execution. And the bunny teeth planted on Akshay’s face didn’t do him any good either.

Tees Maar Khan –

Okay, this is one movie, we are really not sure why any actor would do. Meant to be a heist comedy, the Farah Khan directorial failed at every level. An aspiring thief, with the help of an aspiring actress and an aspiring superstar loot a village. Over dramatic and over the top, we are still not over the movie.

It’s Entertainment –

It wasn’t. ‘Teri Meherbaniyan’: Version 2.0, this movie was about a dog who is heir to a multi-crore ‘jaaydaad’. Enter Akshay, in semi-long hair, try to win against a dog, to claim the prize money. Enough said.

The Shaukeens –

Akshay Kumar played himself in the movie, or so we heard. Now when one plays Akshay in any movie, we would love to see how he struggled his way to success, how he is a par excellence actor, how he has such a great sense of humor and how he floors everybody with his witty charm; but here we get a drunkard star, overdoing his antics and yet, a fan-girl madly falling for him. ‘Bade mazaakiye ho ji…’

And with this, we wish the superstar and Bollywood ‘Khiladi’ Akshay Kumar a very happy birthday and happier times ahead.
