New Laurier University business school named after RIM co-founder

The new business school at Wilfrid Laurier University will be known as the Lazaridis School of Busines and Economics.

In a ceremony at the school this morning, Lazaridis, the co-founder of Research In Motion, announced a $20-million personal donation to the business school. “Today we are formally announcing a bold private-public partnership that will help strengthen Laurier University’s already strong reputation in business education.”

In addition to Lazaridis’s donation, the Ontario government is earmarking $15-million for the facility, which is set to open next year.

Lazaridis waxed poetic in speaking at the gathering. “You know, there’s a well-known but ancient saying that fortune favours the bold, but we can’t forget that there’s a more recent saying that fortune favours the prepared mind.”

Lazaridis says he was inspired to provide the funding after meeting recently with University officials. “We identified the need for specialized business programs – business programs that would specialize in teaching high-tech strategy, high-tech managment and high-tech leadership to business students.”

The building itself will be named be renamed Lazaridis Hall.
