Adnan Sami: There is an audience for indie music today

Singer Adnan Sami is revelling in the glory of 'Bhar do jholi meri', the Sabri Brothers' qawwali that he sang for Salman Khan-starrer Bajrangi Bhaijaan.
Adnan has crossed a lot of boxes on his bucket list. One was performing at Wembley stadium in London. He went on to become the first Asian artiste to fill out the prestigious stadium.

“Another was recording with Ashaji on 'Kabhi toh nazar milao',” he says of his biggest selling non-film album of the same name that released in the year 2000.He isn’t too impressed with the way indie music is assessed these days. “Today, what is counted is the number of likes you get on a video but that doesn’t translate into purchases. Likes may be great to boost your ego, but it doesn’t mean that it will translate into revenue. When you are talking CD sales, however, you are talking revenue.”

Eventually, he believes independent music will resurface because slowly Bollywood is reducing the number of songs included in a film to 3-4. “We are a nation that loves music. We need to have our music fix. If Bollywood is going to reduce its output, non-film music will come to fill the space,” he says.
The singer feels blessed to have come from a privileged family that travelled the world and giving him the chance to take up the piano at an early age. This push led him to becoming the fastest keyboard player in the world. Adnan used his talents in his independent music and is working on interesting new music of his own that will be out soon.
