Amaal Mallik: My dream is to compose for Karan Johar and Aditya Chopra

The year 2015 has been meteoric for composer, and now singer, Amaal Mallik. Says Amaal, “All thanks to Bhushan Kumar for entrusting me with the singles and his own productions starting from ‘Sooraj Dooba Hain’, which is all the way my biggest hit.
Lyricist Kumaar and I did 'Tere Bin Nahi Laage' and 'Saiyaan Superstar' (Ek Paheli Leela), 'Zindagi Aa Raha Hoon' Main with Manoj Muntashir, 'Chal Wahan Jaate Hain' with Rashmi Virag for singer Arijit Singh, 'Chaar Shanivaar' (All Is Well) with Shabbir Ahmed and now 'Main Hoon Hero Tera' (Hero) with Kumaar again.”

How Amaal came to Bollywood
He insists no one knows his back story.“It's like a graduation journey. I began working as an assistant since the age of 16 with my father Dabboo Malik, went on to work with composers like Amar Mohile, Salim-Sulaiman, Pritam Da, and Sandeep Chowta.” Amaal has worked on the background scores of about 25 feature films namely Sarkar, Shootout At Lokhandwala, Paan Singh Tomar, Rowdy Rathore, Son Of Sardar, R... Rajkumar, Cocktail, Race 2, Heroine and Youngistan to name a few.

“Kailash Surendranath believed in me and my talent when I was just 19, and he gave me my first big commercial and thereafter worked with me on 25 jingles which really made people notice my work in the ad world. I never had any demos to show to ad directors as I was working as a music producer for Bollywood songs and both the industries work very differently. So I would download videos of my favourite ad directors from their showreels on YouTube, mute their original music, make my own music for those ads and send it back to the directors,” he continues. Amaal ventured into the television industry as well. He composed the title track for Hongey Judaa Na Hum which garnered 4 lakh views.
Then television director Siddharth Sengupta and production house Sphere Origin gave him the show - 26/12 (Chabbis Barah), before he became a full-fledged composer for film music. Right now, all the focus is on Hero and Calendar Girls as they are up for release. Says he, “My songs from Bhushan Kumar’s Sanam Re are being shot. Mastizaade, Junooniyat are ready and there are some more films that I’m working on.” Ask him what his ultimate desire is, and Amaal says, “My dream is to compose for Karan Johar and Aditya Chopra.”
