Frontenacs add two more players

KINGSTON — Forwards Jason Robertson and Ryan Cranford successfully took up the challenge to come to training camp and battle for roster spot on the Kingston Frontenacs.

Both were signed to standard playing contracts on Thursday when Kingston’s camp numbers were cut in half from the 48 players who came in.

Robertson, from Northville, Mich., was the team’s fourth-round pick in the April 11 Ontario Hockey League Priority Selection.

Cranford, from Embrun, Ont., was a 10th-round draft choice in 2014 by Kingston.

“They both came in and did what we asked everyone to do — come in and earn a spot,” said Kingston’s director of hockey operations Darren Keily.

“They came to camp with a mission. We said there were spots to be earned and these two boys did it.”

Keily said both Robertson and Cranford were “awesome” in fitness testing the team conducted on Tuesday.

Robertson, six-foot-one, 179 pounds and a right winger with the Don Mills Flyers last season, becomes the fourth 16-year-old to sign from the 1999 age-group draft held in April.

Four is the maximum number of 16-year-olds an OHL team can carry.

Jacob Drobczyk, 18, was also signed out of the draft group.

The 17-year-old Cranford, five-foot-11 and 173 pounds, is also a right winger. He played in the Ottawa region last year.

Keily said management was quite happy with the entire group of 2015 drafted players.

“We can only keep four. There will be more from that group that will be Kingston Frontenacs in the future,” Keily said.
