CHENNAI/TRICHY: The kidneys and eyes of a 77- year-old man, who was declared brain dead after a road accident near Perambalur, were donated to those in need on Thursday. However, his liver, which was brought via a green corridor to Chennai for transplant, proved unfit on assessment.
Chandrahasan S, who was a cinema theatre manager, was hit by a truck on the busy Chennai bypass on August 30.
He was rushed to the Gitanjali Medical Centre at Puthur in Trichy for treatment. However, his pulse was very weak. He had suffered a traumatic brain injury, and doctors declared that the patient suffered a brain stem death.
After family members gave consent to the doctors, the patient was transferred to the Lifeline Hospital in Trichy as the hospital was part of the Tamil Nadu Organ Sharing Registry.
Speaking to TOI, Dr S Vel Aravindh, a nephrologist at Frontline Hospital who performed the organ harvesting, said despite being elderly, the patient was healthy. The kidneys were transplanted in a female patient at Lifeline Hospital, and an eye was sent to Joseph Eye Hospital in Trichy.
The patient’s liver with proper medication was rushed in an ambulance to Chennai. Police created a green corridor from Chengalpet to Global Hospitals in Chennai for the smooth movement of the ambulance. “But on checking the liver after it reached the hospital, we found that the organ was not viable and so we could not go ahead with the transplant,” said sources at Global Hospital.
