Criminals have apparently been getting the better of police because officers they have been given a fleet of small engined Vauxhall Corsas without sirens to track down law breakers.

West Midlands Police has a fleet of 109 Vauxhall Corsa cars intended for neighbourhood policing.

But the Police Federation, which represents rank and file officers, said the vehicles had been used for more than 100 urgent calls in the past 12 months.

Not wanting to rub their police noses in it but there are a lot better police cars around the world and here is a selection.

Swift: Lamborghini Gallardo can catch most people

1) Lamborghini Gallardo

With a top speed of 203mph, 0-62mph in 3.2 seconds, 560bhp and four wheel drive this is the Top Trump of police cars.

It belongs to the Italian State Police and was donated by the Italian car company to help "accident and crime prevention and sustain security on Italian roads".

Off-road: Brabus G63 AMG is the desert nation of Dubai's 4x4 of choice

2) Brabus G63 AMG

When there is a chance of off-road pursuit through the desert you need something quick and with good 4x4 capabilities.

Well that's what the Dubai police force think clearly as they have these 149mph modified off-roaders which chuck out 690bhp and go 0-62mph in 4.9 seconds.

All of which makes it quicker than a camel and certainly a lot more comfortable.

Fast: Humberside police use Lexus IS-F

3) Lexus IS-F

A UK entry to make those in Birmingham in their Corsas even more jealous.

This 416bhp beast has an on-board computer to allow officers to access the Police National Computer for vehicle checks.

Humberside Police picked this to replace their Subaru fleet and are currently enjoying a 5.0-litre V8 engine capable of reaching 62mph in 4.8 seconds but with the top speed electronically limited to 168mph.

Muscle: A Dodge Charger is the American police car of choice

4) Dodge Charger

When US cops decided it was time to move on from the classic Ford Crown Victoria they went for a classic muscle car.

This version though has ballistic door panels, slide-out trunk tray and a 292bhp engine.

Even Smokey and the Bandit would have trouble shaking this 120mph workhorse.

Classy: British police use a Jaguar XF to catch criminals

5) Jaguar XF

You would kind of feel for the police officer handed a helmet and a mountain bike when this is parked in the car park.

At a top speed of 155mph and a 0-62mph of 6.4mph there is not much quicker than this classic marque.

It's a diesel too so fuel bills should be too criminal either.

Undercover: A Nissan GT-R is used by some plain clothed cops in America to fight crime

6) Nissan GT-R

It's not marked and so perfect for undercover operations when you don't want the villains to escape.

Apparently some police forces in the US are using this 193mph, 0-60 in 3.2 seconds beast to stay on top of crime.

If you were of a suspicious nature you might be forgiven for thinking whoever ordered these had been watching The Fast and the Furious too many times.

Cannonball: Dubai police have an array of supercars

7) Supercars

The Dubai Police Force are a macho bunch.

They were green rather than blue, carry sub-machine guns, grenades, laser tasers and pistols and drive super cars.

At the last count they had, wait for it, a Lamborghini Aventador LP 700-4, a Ferrari FF, a Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG, a Bentley Continental GT, a limited edition Aston Martin One-77, a Bugatti Veyron, an Audi R8, a McLaren MP4-12C, and a Hummer H3.

Sports: Home Counties forces use a Lotus Evora S to preach safe speeds

8) Lotus Evora S

If your heavy foot lands on the accelerator in the Home Counties then watch out for this sports car in your rear view mirror.

Officers from Norfolk, Sussex, Essex, Bedfordshire, Hertfordshire and Cambridgeshire were given one by Lotus to help spread the message speeding is bad.

Ironic really, giving a 178mph car to make people slow down.

German: Traffic officers use a Brabus CLS V12 on the autobahn

9) Brabus CLS V12

We are in Germany and it's not a Porsche but a CLS "Rocket" with a top speed of 225mph with a 730bhp engine catching the crook.

It's not the prettiest car but it shifts and has plenty of room inside for those abusing the autobahn rules.
