Tame Impala's Currents tops first ever Progressive Albums Chart

Tame Impala will be revealed as the first ever Number 1 with their album Currents when the inaugural chart is published in the September edition of the magazine, on sale Wednesday September 9.

Showcasing a range of artists - from Pink Floyd and Genesis to Muse and Public Service Broadcasting, this chart will be a definitive monthly list of the UK's most popular prog albums.

Jerry Ewing, editor of Prog Magazine, said: "You look at some of the best-selling and acclaimed artists of the modern era like Muse, Radiohead, Mogwai, Tame Impala - what they do is incredible, they are challenging themselves, their audience and inspiring a new generation."

He added: "The Official Progressive Albums Chart is the platform in which this will be recognised. We're delighted to be working with the Official Charts Company and that the voice of the UK's best-selling music has given prog the platform it so deserves."

To celebrate the launch of the new chart, the Official Charts Company has also compiled a list of the biggest selling Prog artists of the 21st century.

An all-British Top 4 sees Muse take the top spot with 4.4 million album sales, beating Pink Floyd into second place with 3.8 million albums sold. Radiohead are third and Kate Bush, the biggest selling prog female, is in fourth place.

Prog Magazine is also holding its fourth annual Progressive Music Awards presented by Orange Amplification in association with currencies.co.uk.

Pink Floyd, King Crimson and Steven Wilson are all nominated for three awards, with Pink Floyd and Wilson going head-to-head for band/artist of the year, album of the year and The Storm Thorgerson Grand Design award.

In the live event category, Kate Bush's 2014 shows, her first in 35 years, earns her a nomination.

The 2015 awards, hosted by TV presenter Matthew Wright, will take place at London's Underglobe venue, beneath Shakespeare's Globe Theatre, on Thursday September 3.
