Rajahmundry: The police have failed to make any progress to find out the culprits in the stampede which claimed 28 lives in the inauguration of Godavari Maha Push-karalu at Pushkar ghat.
They examined 180 persons including government officials, devotees, and kin of the deceased and ot-hers who were present at the time of the incident.
Though the Three town police booked a case soon after the tragic incident, they are examining the eye witnesses one after another to recreate the scene. The feedback they got from the enquiry says that the number of devotees waiting in the barricades leading to the Pushkar ghat was normal until 6.30 am on July 14.
The police stopped entry and exit of devotees at the Pushkar ghat while CM N. Chandrababu Nai-du was performing rituals, but the number of wa-iting devotees started to increase minute by minute.
The moment, the devotees were let out from entry or exit at the ghat soon af-ter the CM left, the sudden surge of devotees resulted in the stampede. The police turned down rum-ours of overhead power line getting snapped forcing the devotees to rush for cover to avoid electric shock. The police are un-able to get any fresh clues to probe further into the case. As there is a deadli-ne to complete the probe, the police say that they are examining some more witnesses to find out any clues.
Rajahmundry Urban DSP (Central) J. Kulasek-har said, “We have been examining a large number of persons including government officials, NG-Os and those who were present on the spot to find out any clues that led to the stampede deaths. Once we complete the enquiry, we will submit the report.”
