David Bowie has signed up to provide original songs for a new stage production of SpongeBob, which will open in the US next year.

The Ziggy Stardust legend first became a fan of the yellow Krabby Patty lover, while watching the Nickelodeon TV show, with his young daughter Alexandria Zahra Jones, now 15.

The 68-year-old will create material for the musical, alongside other high profile musicians, including Aerosmith, John Legend and Cyndi Lauper, The Flaming Lips and T.I.

The show, set in Bikini Bottom, will debut at Chicago’s Oriental Theatre in June.

It will then head to Broadway and could be produced globally after that.

Bowie is no stranger to musicals or SpongeBob. He is working on musical Lazarus, which opens later this year - and he was the voice of a SpongeBob character in 2007.

He played Lord Royal Highness in made-for-TV film SpongeBob’s Atlantis SquarePantis.

The well-loved cheeky cartoon character is viewed in 185 countries and has been translated into 50 languages, since it first screened 13 years ago.

The recent cinema box office hit, The SpongeBob: Sponge Out Of Water, took more than £200m this summer.
