KHON KAEN - Officers at Muang police station took time off from their routines on Wednesday to help a pregnant female drug suspect to give birth.

The station jail erupted in chaos at 2pm when Pornchuda Jitracharoen, who was six-months pregnant, shouted for help after showing signs that she was ready to deliver.

Police who had passed first aid and delivery courses were immediately called in to help her, as other female suspects lent a hand until health officials from Khon Kaen Hospital could get to the station.

By the time the doctors and nurses arrived, though, the station had an addition to its population: a baby boy weighing 2,000 grammes amid general happiness by officers and detainees.

"The suspect went into labour and delivered the baby before the due date as it was only six months," said Pol Col Noppadol Petchsut, the station superintendent. ''The mother and her baby were sent to the hospital, but she is under watch around the clock by police."

Pornchuda, 26, was arrested at an apartment in Muang district with 0.98 grammes of crystal methamphetamine after her neighbours complained to police about being disturbed by loud noise in the room.

Police found eight persons in the room including her.

Pol Col Noppadol said police were not aware that she was pregnant during the arrest.

The police station chief did not say when she was arrested and the fate of her colleagues in the room.

The name of the baby boy was not reported.
