'Lost' Woodchester Park gardens discovered

A "forgotten" terraced garden has been uncovered at Woodchester Park, near Nympsfield.

The National Trust said it was overgrown and had been hidden under a commercial forestry plantation.

The early 19th Century gardens were associated with a Georgian mansion in the grounds of the park, which was later replaced by Woodchester Mansion.

Archaeological surveys have found gravel paths hidden underneath a build-up of soil, and also a pond.

Work has begun on opening up the garden area and to restore the terraced walks for the public.

The £22,000 project has been funded by Gloucestershire Environmental Trust and the Linley Shaw Foundation.
