A five-year-old Calgary boy is recovering at the Alberta Children's Hospital after he was attacked by a dog inside his home on Tuesday afternoon.

Authorities say the attack took place at a home in the northwest community of Ranchlands.

Neighbours tell CTV that there was a couple, another woman, and three children inside the home when the incident took place.

They say a woman ran outside with two of the children, and then went around to the back of the home. The other woman inside the home stayed with the injured child until EMS arrived.

When paramedics arrived at the scene, the boy was rushed to hospital in serious but stable condition. Officials say the boy suffered serious injuries to his face.

Meanwhile, the dog involved in the attack was contained inside one of the rooms when Bylaw officers arrived at the scene.

The breed of the dog hasn't been confirmed and EMS say that it's likely the animal didn't even live there.

Nevertheless, the disturbing attack has neighbours concerned.

"It's just kind of sad, you know, like something like that would happen. To have a big dog like that in a home with very small children, it just doesn't seem very responsible," said Irene Murphy, a neighbour.

According to Animal and Bylaw Services, the number of serious dog attacks are increasing in the city, with 244 attacks in 2014 alone, but the agency says it's not because it is a growing problem, but rather more people are reporting the attacks.
