This 291 km stretch of National Highway 1 is proving to be one of the deadliest highways ever to be constructed or rather still to be constructed. This incomplete stretch of the National Highway 1 has cost many their lives.

On an average, seven persons have died every month in road accidents on that dreadful stretch of the highway from January 2012 - April 2015. Major cause of these mishaps are over speeding and careless driving.

The RTI reply revealed that 1,084 commuters had sustained injuries (fatal, grievous and minor) on NH-1 road stretch that falls in Haryana and Punjab in 2,976 road accidents.

Several loopholes have aggravated the situation like lack of high-mast lights, parking vehicles by the roadside during night that is highly dangerous for commuters and the construction of numerous flyovers and diversions have added to the misery of the commuters.

The six-lane stretch of the Panipat-Jalandhar section of NH-1 stands delayed by almost 4 years. The project started in May 2009 and was due for completion by November 2011. With the estimated time of completion due in November 2015, the deadly highway which has claimed the lives of hundreds till now, seems far from nearing completion.
