Observing chaturmas, the four months in the Hindu lunar calendar when people take vows and fast, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been eating one meal a day for over a month now.

With the chaturmas this year from July 27 to November 22, the Prime Minister will be sticking to the routine of eating once a day even when he travels to New York later this month for the meeting of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).

In the Hindu calendar, chaturmas or the four months of the monsoon begins on ekadashi, the eleventh lunar day in the month of Ashadh, and ends on ekadashi in the month of Kartik.

In Gujarat, chaturmas falls between dev podhi ekadashi (Hindus believe that’s the day Lord Vishnu goes to sleep) and dev uthi ekadashi (the day he awakens).

Those who observe chaturmas eat only once a day, at a time of their choosing.
