Ctg city under water again
Most of the low-lying areas of Chittagong city again went under knee- to waist-deep water after the heavy shower since Monday night.
Chittagong Met Office recorded 144mm of rainfall in the last 24 hours till noon yesterday. Abdul Hamid, met officer of Chittagong Met Office, said rain might continue to the next.
Bakalia, Kapasgola, Badurtola, Bahaddarhat, Shulakbahar, Agrabad, Halishahar, Aturar Depot, Oxygen Intersection, Katalganj, Chawk Bazar, KB Aman Ali Road, Dewan Bazar, Bara Pool, Chhota Pool, Masterpool and Bowbazar areas went under water causing misery to commuters.
The Daily Star found that water entered into houses and shops and people were busy throwing out water with buckets. Commuters were walking through filthy water as they outnumbered vehicles. Many passengers were waiting for a long time for vehicles.
Sanjana Binte Rashid, a student of class IX, had to wait for over half-an-hour for a rickshaw and then had to pay double the fare.
One Tapati Das fell into a roadside ditch while she was wading through murky water.
Nur Nahar was electrocuted when she came into contact with an electric wire while walking through dirty water on Chan Miah Munshi Lane in West Bakalia yesterday morning.
On-duty doctors at Chittagong Medical College Hospital declared her dead around 9:30am, said hospital sources.
Incessant rain also brought misery to street vendors, hawkers and cobblers as their income went down.
Shahedul Azam, a resident of Shulak Bahar, held Chittagong City Corporation (CCC) officials responsible for not taking proper initiative to address waterlogging.
Contacted, CCC Panel Mayor Chowdhury Hasan Mahmud Hasni said the newly elected CCC council has planned to set up 12 sluice gates with pumps in different areas of the city in a bid to protect the city from tidal water, and to pump out rainwater quickly.
"We will start our work immediately after monsoon season and we hope it would bring relief to the city residents," he said.
