If there's one transfer saga this summer will be remembered by, it's the epic struggle between Manchester United and Real Madrid over David de Gea .

Of course, that struggle has just become even more gargantuan - and far more ridiculous. With the deal seemingly on the verge of collapse after a delay in Real's submission of transfer documents to the relevant authorities, the protracted transfer is now in danger of becoming a farce.

Thankfully, the people of Twitter like farce. They also like parody, satire and a generous dose of trolling - Real and de Gea himself are certainly facing plenty of the latter right now.

Some of it is pretty merciless. Some of it is pretty hilarious. Some of it is both cruel and hilarious. Without further ado, here's the very best of the internet's semi-hysterical reaction to the debacle.

Some feel that Real Madrid's computer software might need an update...

Others think their IT department will be having a meltdown...

One guy reckons there was an unforeseen error with the paperwork...

And another thinks that Real's officials are a bit anti-technology...

Some feel that the problems might actually have come from United's end...

Some feel Ed Woodward might have been making a point...

And some reckon that Louis van Gaal didn't get his admin done...

Others just feel sorry for de Gea...

One fan feels really, really sorry for him...

Another reckons that he'll be on his way back to England soon...

And another thinks that de Gea will have even itchier feet now...

Either way, the whole thing has been a major error...

Little wonder that some just can't handle it, then...

It's not often we get to laugh at one of the world's biggest clubs and one of the world's best keepers all at once. However, today's just one of those days.

Don't be too gutted, David. You'll get your transfer next year. Maybe.
