A motorcyclist was mowed by a Mercedes, before the car sped away in east Delhi’s Preet Vihar on Sunday night. The car’s number plate was noted down by bystanders and also captured by CCTV cameras, upon which its owner was arrested on Monday.

Blaming the police for shielding the errant driver initially, the locals clashed with a police team and torched two motorcycles belonging to them. The police, however, dismissed the allegations.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (East) Bhairon Singh Gurjar said a few policemen suffered minor injuries in the scuffle with agitated locals, but none required hospitalisation.

The police have registered two first information reports — one against the Mercedes driver and another against the rioters. A man identified as Dharmendra has been arrested for torching the police motorcycle and CCTV footage is being scanned to identify the remaining suspects.

The incident took place around 10 p.m. on Sunday when victim Monu (23) was returning to his Mandawali home. He was a plumber in Laxmi Nagar.

While passing through Nagraj Marg near Nirman Vihar metro station, the car rammed his motorcycle. The motorcycle was flung away due to the impact and Monu’s head struck a roadside signboard. “Some persons noted down the car’s registration number since the driver sped away instead of stopping to assist the victim. Monu was rushed to a nearby hospital, but he died due to multiple injuries to the head and neck,” said a senior police officer.

The driver was identified as 45-year-old Rajkumar Chawla, the director of his company. “The accident took place just outside his house while he was leaving from home. He did not stop to help the victim. Instead, he fled.”

Chawla was arrested on Monday afternoon and booked for causing death by negligence and rash driving.
