Bringing an amendment in its Handbook of Information, Panjab University (PU) has now extended a two per cent reservation to the grandchildren of the victims of the 1984 anti-Sikh riots in Punjab.
According to Rule (vii) of the PU Handbook of Information of 2015, the reservation was earlier provided only to the children of the victims of the 1984 riots. The decision regarding the reservation was taken in the meeting of the Syndicate on Sunday. A committee was formed under Dean University Instructions AK Bhandari after a notification in this regard was issued by the government. As conveyed by the government, the grandchildren of the 1984 riot victims should be covered under this benefit. In a meeting of the Syndicate held earlier, the consideration of the item was deferred, but in a meeting on August 3, the committee decided to extend the reservation to the grandchildren of the riot victims. The reservation will be extended in cases where the seats are lying vacant for the current session.
From the next academic session, the reservation will be regularised as per the decision taken by the members of the Syndicate.
