Berto claims that Mayweather has difficulty dealing with athletic guys. He said being the athletic guy that he is, Mayweather will have a problem dealing with him.
“The thing with Floyd is, most guys he fights aren’t as athletic as he is. But I am… If you come at Floyd fast but don’t have a plan and don’t have good footwork, it’s too easy for him. If you have a guy that’s as athletic as him, it gives him problems,” Berto told boxingnewsonline.net.
In some of his difficult fights, Berto has knocked out elite opponents with what he calls his own “crazy” uppercut. It is something that Berto has perfected throughout his career and it has turned lost fights into victories for the ex-WBC welterweight titlist.
“There is a lot more to me than just walking guys down. I have speed, I have power, I have a crazy uppercut, I can move to the side. There are a lot of ways I can get it done,” said Berto, who is a 40-1 underdog leading up to the Sept. 12 fight.
Having qualified as member of the U.S, team in the 2004 Olympics and a known athletic guy, Berto has what it takes to beat Mayweather, especially now that he is fighting uninjured after facing opponents for a number of years with injury.
Berto has the speed and power that could prove difficult for Mayweather to address. He can move swiftly inside and out and from side to side with ease though he lacks punching accuracy in contrast with Mayweather’s own precision punching.
Berto seems to have prepared harder for the Mayweather fight knowing that a win could boost his career with more lucrative fights ahead.
“This is my first time going into a fight without all the pressure on my back. I’ve always been the favorite in every fight. I don’t know what he’s feeling and I don’t really have to care about it,” Berto reasoned. “It’s a different mindset.
While Mayweather isn’t supposed to say good things about Berto being his opponent, he has to make some pitches for him to address the disenchanted fans who disagreed with his choice of Berto.
“Berto can fight. He’s a two-time champion. He’s hungry. He comes to wage a war. There is never a dull moment when he fights so I expect a hell of a fight out of him. We’ll all see how it plays out,” Mayweather said.
The Mayweather-Berto showdown will take place at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas Nevada and will be available on HBO pay-per-view.
