He pointed out that the Bill will revamp the fishing industry and attract investors who prefer investing in areas that are anchored in law.
“The Bill will help in boosting the fishing industry and create employment for thousands of youth in the country,” President Kenyatta said.
He spoke Monday during a meeting with members of the Mombasa Chapter of the Kenya National Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KNCCI) at State House, Mombasa.
The Head of State said he looked forward to signing the new Fisheries Bill by September this year.
President Kenyatta also asked Bandari College, the Kenya Navy and the Kenya Ports Authority to work together in training seafarers to enable them exploit emerging job opportunities in the marine industry.
He said the government was also keen on ensuring that the tourism sector is operating at full throttle in the coast region.
“I have no doubt that if it works in Mombasa, it works in the whole region and the whole country. If we get it right in Mombasa, we will get it right in the whole region and the whole country,” President Kenyatta said.
He assured that the national government will not waiver in its efforts to improve the road network in the region, saying infrastructure development is a key component of his administration’s economic growth strategy.
“We are working on all major roads in the region’s six counties,” the Head of State said.
The KNCCI members, led by their Chairman James Mureu, applauded the President for spearheading the country’ economic growth.
They also commended the ongoing war against illicit brews and narcotic drugs, especially in Mombasa County.
Mureu appealed for allocation of more funds to infrastructure to address the perennial traffic congestion that is causing huge losses in terms of time and money.
“Building of the Likoni Channel, improvement of the Changamwe roundabout and construct of an express lane to the Moi International Airport in Mombasa will go a long way in alleviating the traffic nightmare in the coastal city,” Mureu said.
He welcomed the government’s initiatives to revive the tourism industry, saying it will help keep off radicalization and drug abuse among the youth in the region.
At a separate meeting at State House, Mombasa, President Kenyatta urged the Mombasa business community to be at the forefront in curbing radicalization and extremism in the county.
He said while the Government was doing its best to create a conducive environment for doing business, local investors had a role to play in ending vices that were a major hindrance to investment.
The President also held talks with Coast professionals and Kaya elders. The region’s all-inclusive development agenda dominated the meeting.
President Kenyatta directed Kaya forests to be gazetted following requests from the elders.
