Protesters want the Greater Vancouver Zoo shut down following the death of a red panda with Winnipeg connections.

Two months ago, Rakesh the red panda was transferred from the Assiniboine Park Zoo to the Greater Vancouver Zoo as part of a program to preserve endangered species.

After arriving in Vancouver the animal died suddenly from a fungal infection that zookeepers say he contracted in Winnipeg.

However, protestors say this isn’t the first sudden death at the Greater Vancouver Zoo.

The protestors planned a rally yesterday to demand closure of the zoo, but were forced to postpone after the zoo closed due to damage from last weekend’s windstorms.

The group plans to protest next Sunday instead.
