Delhi Police Commissioner Bhim Sain Bassi wants a complete revamp of the Delhi Police, right from the top brass to beat policing.

According to cops, various changes will take place in the coming three to four months which will be a boon for Delhiites and policing across the national Capital. Incidentally, the backbone of Delhi Police - beat policing -will undergo a revamp.

Cops are claiming that once all the proposals are implemented, there will be at least four policemen available all the time at beats even if others are busy in various jobs. The aim is to address instances where beats remain locked or are without cops.

Moreover, Delhi will have two more districts besides the existing 11. A few ranks may also be introduced to strengthen the policing system.

According to the police, every district was asked to submit a revamp proposal of beats. In the coming days, districts will have lesser beats with more cops.

"Recently, every district was asked to submit a proposal of revamping structure of their respective beats. Currently, there are around 20 beats in every district, but now top brass has asked district heads to submit proposal wherein number of beats would be reduced to 10-12. After the implementation of the suggestions, there will be at least 10 cops for every beat. Currently, there are four policemen and it has been noticed that all of them remain missing from the beat box most of the time," a special commissioner rank official told Mail Today.

Confirming the move, Delhi Police Public Relations Officer Rajan Bhagat told Mail Today that this step will not only benefit the public but will also help to improve policing.

"This rearrangement of beat system will directly help the masses. After this shake-up, cops will be able to focus more effectively on their beat areas that will improve policing," Bhagat said.

According to sources, there is an acute shortage of staff at the lower level that forced the seniors to revamp beat policing. According to a top police official, a sub-inspector-level officer will have few beats and will be responsible for crime and other law and order issues in his or her respective areas.

Apart from beat policing, Delhi Police will have two more districts which will be announced in a couple of months. "Paper job of adding two more districts is done. It is in the final stage. This will also bring down per cop per lakh person ratio in Delhi," sources said. Delhi Police will attach more IPS and DANIPS officers at the district level. Plans are afoot to introduce one more designation at the district level.

In the first week of August, Delhi Police had introduced a new position of senior special commissioner. Currently there are three senior special commissioners -administration, special unit and law and order - who are heading all special commissioners and reporting directly to the commissioner of Delhi. Moreover, Delhi Police is launching app for various purposes almost every month.

Bassi had earlier said that Delhi Police will introduce various applications for the public as well as police officials. On Friday, Delhi Police had launched "Delhi Police. One touch away" app that will facilitate to access all the services provided by Delhi Police Apps with just one touch/click. This will have all contact numbers of district heads and SHOs.
