Onam celebrations

Onam festival was celebrated on the campus of Narayanaguru College of Engineering, Kuzhithurai, Kanyakumari district, on Friday. G. Sridharan, college chairman, and G. Chandralekha, Managing Trustee, took part in the celebrations which included a feast, Onam processiony with Chendai Melam and competitions such ase Pookkalam and tug of war. Heads of Department of Electronic Media and Information Technology Paul T. Benziker and Shyam coordinated the event.

Onam festival was also celebrated on the campus of Grace Group of Institutions.

Seminar on writers

An intercollegiate seminar on fourteenth century English poet Geoffrey Chaucer and Elizabethan writers Edmund Spenser and William Shakespeare was held at Muslim Arts College, Thiruvithancode, recently. Nearly 400 postgraduate students from colleges in Tirunelveli and Kanyakumari districts attended the seminar.

Professor G. Pragasam Anthony from Thiruvananthapuram inaugurated the seminar and made a brief survey of British literature from Chaucer to Shakespeare. Premalatha Dinakarlal of Holy Cross College, Nagercoil, delivered a lecture on Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales, and Professor M. Sebastian, Director of English, St. Xavier’s College of Engineering, Chunkankadai, spoke on Spenser’s Faerie Queene. E. James Reynold Daniel, former Principal of Scott Christian College, Nagercoil, traced the development of Shakespearean criticism over the centuries.

H. Mohamed Ali, secretary of Muslim Arts College, S. Dawn Dharma Roy, Principal, N. Janardhanan, Head, PG Department of English and Research Centre, had made the arrangements.

Workshop on film production

The third edition of a three-day workshop on ‘Film production’ of Visual Communications Department of Noorul Islam College was held recently at Noorul Islam Arts and Science College recently. Renowned cinematographer and national awardee Sunny Joseph inaugurated the workshop. Special invitees for the workshop were Shemin B. Nair, research scholar, United Kingdom, and Paul T. Benziger, HOD, Department of Electronic Media, Narayanaguru College of Engineering. Cibi S. Kumar, HOD, Visual Communications Department, welcomed the gathering.

NCICST 2015

A seminar on Innovation in Chemical Sciences and Technology, ‘NCICST 2015,’ was conducted at Scott Christian College in association with GIAP Journals, Mumbai, and Association of Chemistry Teachers (ACT), Mumbai, on August 21. C. Nagarajan, Project Manager, Semi-Cryogenic Project, ISRO, was the chief guest. Anshu Dandia, Vice President, Indian Chemical Society, G. Ramakrishnan, president, Chromatography Society of India, P.K. Tandon, Professor, University of Allahabad, D.V. Prabhu, secretary, ACT, and Rajni Dwivedi, CEO, GIAP Journals, participated.

Professor Rashi, Head, Department of Chemistry, welcomed the gathering. Professor Malar Retna, Convenor NCICST, read out the proceedings. Priya Brat Dwivedi, GIAP, proposed vote of thanks.

Association inaugurated

The Information Technology Department Association, Adroit ’15, was inaugurated at K.L.N. College of Information Technology, Pottapalayam, by R. Perumalraja, Head, Department of Information Technology, Velammal College of Engineering and Technology, on August 6. In his address, Dr. Perumalraja explained the advanced technologies in information science. J.S. Gnanasekaran, Principal, presided over the function.

Quiz contest

Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering of K. L. N. College of Engineering, Pottapalayam, in association with Sparkles Students Association, conducted a quiz programme in memory of A. P. J. Abdul Kalam on August 13. It was conducted by S. C. Sivaprakash. Prizes were awarded to winners at the Independence Day celebration by the college president, K. N. K. Karthick. The Principal, A. V. Ramprasad, presided.

Rotaract Club inaugurated

The Rotaract Club of Standard Fireworks Rajaratnam College for Women, Sivakasi, was inaugurated on August 17 by R. P. Ramamoorthy, president of the Rotary Club of Sivakasi. Past president of the Rotaract Club, G. Padmavathi of third-year B.Com., welcomed the gathering. K. Abinaya of third-year B.Com., past secretary, presented the annual report for 2014-15. Mr. Ramamoorthy installed M. Ramya of second-year B.Com. as president and A. Sheerin Shameema of second-year B.Com. as secretary of the Rotaract Club of SRC.

“Develop spirit of scientific inquiry”

The 69th Independence Day was celebrated at Sri Kaliswari College, Sivakasi, with K. Manoharan, Head, Department of Plant Morphology and Algology, School of Biological Sciences, Madurai Kamaraj University, hoisting the national flag. S. Krishnamurthy, Principal, administered a pledge on national integration to the faculty members and students. In his address, Dr. Manoharan, advised the students to develop the spirit of scientific inquiry to contribute to nation building. P. Rasu Kutty of second-year M.Sc. (Maths) and K. Siva Kumar of third-year B.Sc. (Biotech) recited poems in Tamil to pay tributes to martyrs of the freedom movement. M. Dhivya of first year M.A. (English) presented a poem in English. S. Ananthi of third year B.A. (Tamil) welcomed the gathering and S. Rachel of second-year M.A. proposed a vote of thanks.

Apple lab

An Apple Computer Laboratory, consisting of 34 Apple workstations, was declared open by K. Prabhakar, Vice-President, Tech Mahindra, Bengaluru, at Kamaraj College of Engineering and Technology, Virudhunagar, recently. In his address, Mr. Prabhakar highlighted the importance of innovation through Apple environment.

More than 490 Fortune 500 companies were using Apple platforms, focussing on coding, scripting and innovation. C. Marimuthu, chairman of the college, said that the lab would be kept open round-the-clock and proper assistance extended to students who registered for courses in Apple platform. Sasihidharani Shanmugarajan, who has developed more than 15 apps using iOS, stressed the need for identifying more problems suitable for developing apps.

K. Sarukesi, Dean, offered felicitations. Anant Achary, Principal, proposed a vote of thanks.

Embedded system in automation

The Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering of P. S. R. Engineering College, Sivakasi, organised a lecture on ‘Embedded system involved in automation’ by K. Pratap, Team Leader (Embedded Testing), Inetz Techno Solutions, recently.

R. Solaisamy, correspondent, presided over the function. R. Kirtivyas welcomed the gathering.

B. G. Vishnuram, Principal, delivered the presidential address. P. Marichamy, Dean, spoke about the basics of embedded systems. S. Balasubramanian proposed a vote of thanks.

Women’s forum inaugurated

The Women Empowerment Cell of Sri Vidya College of Engineering and Technology, Virudhunagar, organised a seminar on ‘Self-discipline and self-control’ on August 12 in which Chakaravarthy, Deputy Superintendent of Police, Virudhunagar, and S. Suresh Kumar, Sub-Inspector of Police, Amathur, addressed the students. The Principal, S. Sankaralingam, welcomed the gathering. Muthu, Assistant Professor, proposed a vote of thanks.

Economies of

India and the US

A seminar on ‘Indian economy and American economy’ was held at Karaikudi Institute of Management, Karaikudi, on August 13. Pitchappan Pethachi, Executive Director, Concentrix, USA, the key speaker, said that innovation in technology, creative ideas and consistent hard work of the youth would lead to successful growth of a nation. He recalled how the US economy bounced back from the slowdown of 2007 and now the US $ was stronger due to the steps taken by the Obama administration to revive the economy. He pointed out that 54 per cent of the Indian population was youth and development of Indian economy was in the hands of the youth. Chairman V. Ayyappan presided over the seminar.
