It was the first time that Vasundhara Thiara (12) competed in Category B of a golf tournament. This did not stop her from helping her team win the Albatross Inter-School Golf Championships in Gurgaon on Friday.

Her teammate Aadil Bedi (14) was more experienced. Together, they helped their school, Vivek High School, Sector 38, notch up a win with a three-stroke margin over their nearest rival. Thiara shot a overall score of 156 (73 and 83) while Bedi shot a overall score of 145 (70 and 75).

“It was for the first time that I was taking part in category B and the conditions were tough in Gurgaon. It was humid due to the rain and the tee was different from what I experienced in category C. But I wanted to compete under the category this year and I am happy that we won. It was a tough competition and the win will give me confidence for the Category B tournaments next year,” shared Thiara, who is a class VII student

A regular winner at the junior level, Thiara won the IGU Championships in Delhi earlier this year before claiming the third spot in the Asian Junior Masters Golf Championships in Thailand held in May. Aadil Bedi too has seen his career rise in the category B in the IGU rankings and is currently second in category B with 323 points.

The talented youngster won the IGU Southern India and Telangana Juniors this year and also finished at the seventh spot in the World Junior Masters Golf Championship held in Las Vegas, USA, in July earlier this year.

Festive offer

“I was playing for the fourth time in the championships and winning the championship in tough conditions has been motivational. There were 16 schools taking part with multiple teams and it was off-season for us. But practising ahead of the championships helped us. I will be playing in the IGU Championships in Mumbai on October 3 and this win will boost my confidence,” shared Bedi who is a class XI student.

Both golfers train under Jesse Grewal at the Chandigarh Golf Association Range and fitness coach Sagar Dhiwan. While Bedi will shift to Category A next year, Vasundhara will be competing in Category B in the IGU competitions. “My aim is to be among the top two in category A and also to play at the amateur level next year. There are still four tournaments in IGU calendar left this year and I am aiming for more wins,” said Bedi.
