This is the horrific moment the number of people gored to death by bulls at festivals in Spain this summer reached 12 after a 63-year-old was horned in the heart.

The runner was hit by the charging animal and dragged several metres and was already dead by the time he was taken to a nearby first aid point.

The incident happened around 9.20am in the small town of Cuellar an hour and a half’s drive north of Madrid.

Locals and tourists were celebrating the first day of the annual running of the bulls festival, which dates from the 13th century and is considered the oldest in Spain.

The dead man was gored as horsemen who guide the bulls left the runners to sprint in front of the animals on the way to the ring.

Local authorities confirmed the death of the man, who was from the Basque Country, on holiday and staying with relatives.

There have now been a dozen festival gore deaths since June 24, which is the highest this century.

Last month a 44-year-old French tourist died after being gored during an annual festival in Pedreguer in Alicante.

Since 2000, 74 people have died from gore injuries suffered during bull runs and festivals involving bulls in Spain.

The worst year in recent history was 2009 when 10 people died followed by 2012 when eight died. Last year a single person died.

One expert runner told recently how police at a Pamplona-style bull-run in Leganes near Madrid struggled to keep minors and drunks from joining in.
