Check out IndyCar driver Simon Pagenaud's crazy cork shoes

SONOMA, Calif. — When you’re a French IndyCar driver racing in California wine country, really only one kind of footwear will do. Behold, Simon Pagenaud’s shoes made out of… wine cork material?

The Penske Racing driver, known for his love of food and wine, first saw the shoes at a sponsor event. But they didn’t have them in his size that night, so his girlfriend found them online and bought them for his birthday.

They’re made by Donald J. Pliner, but that’s probably not going to stop us from calling them “Two-Buck Chuck Taylors.”

Pagenaud says he always gets a reaction when he wears them out.

“People are like, ‘What is this?,’” he says. “It’s very unique.”

And no, they’re not fireproof, so Simon won’t be wearing them during Sunday’s race.
