IMG Academy (Bradenton, Fla.) wide receiver Drake Davis is close to wrapping up his recruitment.

The four-star Louisiana product told Gannett partner The Clarion-Ledger that a commitment could come as early as Sunday when the No. 22 Ascenders host Miramar (Fla.) at 2 p.m. on ESPNU in the final game of the GEICO ESPN High School Kickoff.

Right now, Davis has Ole Miss as his leader, but LSU and Texas A&M are also in the mix.

“At the moment, yes, but I can’t put them too far ahead,” Davis said of the Rebels.

“I know it’s between Ole Miss, LSU and Texas A&M. Right now I’m talking to coaches at Ole Miss and LSU to get a better feel with where I think I can fit in the best.”

The 6-foot-4, 215-pounder arrived at IMG three weeks ago after spending last year at Fork Union Military Academy in Virginia. He also has attended high school in Bay St. Louis, Miss.; Baton Rouge, La.; and Zachary, La.

His path to IMG follows a junior year in which he opted against playing football. Davis’ other love is soccer and he gained some international experience at a camp in Spain. He had five goals and an assist in four games for Fork Union last fall.

With his return to the football field, he also has returned to the national recruiting rankings. Rivals.com had him at No. 33 overall in its latest Rivals 100 released last week and drew high praise. Davis was on the receiving end of a touchdown last was called back in the final moments of IMG’s loss to American Heritage (Plantation, Fla.) in a Kickoff Classic last week.

“We saw him after his sophomore year heading into his junior year in Jacksonville and fell in love with him,” Rivals.com national recruiting director Mike Farrell said. “He’s a huge kid, runs like a deer and had five-star capabilities and physical abilities. He was just a physical freak. He dropped out of our ranking system because he didn’t play football as a junior. …

“We saw him at a summer camp at LSU and he is as good as any wide receiver that we see at that camp. Football to soccer is very weird. You don’t hear that very often. He had not done anything with his hands for a year and we were absolutely blown away.

“He could be a five star. Whoever gets him is going to get one of those guys — and I don’t want to compare him to anybody that would be ridiculous comparison right now — but he reminds me a little bit as an athlete of some current NFL top 5 receivers that I saw in high school.”

The school that gets him could very well by Ole Miss. He visited Oxford earlier this summer and spent time in Baton Rouge in July prior to departing for Bradenton. In narrowing down his decision, he said he is evaluating the strengths and tendencies of his finalists’ offenses.

“Ole Miss passes the ball a lot. That’s why they got (five-star quarterback) Shea Patterson,” Davis said. “One thing I’m thinking about at Ole Miss is that they’re going to recruit receivers, but at LSU they recruit a lot of running backs. I feel like I could show my receiver skills at LSU because they run the ball a lot more in their offense. At Ole Miss there are a lot of receivers trying to compete with you.”

The receiver notes similarities to the Rebels offense with Texas A&M.

“They’re kind of like Ole Miss offense-wise. They like to pass the ball a lot,” he said. “I know I’ll be good off the field too. … They’re all about structure and I come from a military school so I like that.”

Prior to arriving at IMG three weeks ago, Davis had an existing relationship with his current quarterback, Shea Patterson.

“I’m probably the closest with Shea (at IMG),” he said. “We used to go to LSU camps every year and he would be my quarterback every time.”

Patterson, who is developing an M.O. as the lead recruiter in the Rebels 2016 class, has made multiple pitches to his wide receiver teammate.

“Of course, I hear it all the time,” he said. “That’s like an everyday thing down here.”
