‘Delhi govt should be more welcoming of production here’

Of late, there has been a lot of talk about Delhi being developed as a hub of film and TV shoots. Efforts have been made by filmmakers and TV producers to set up infrastructure in the capital to aid shooting. However, permission hassles, increased shooting costs and opposition from certain parties has posed difficulties in making this happen.
Despite all this, shootings have been happening in the city and recently, the shoot of the upcoming show Agent 'Raghav', took place here.
The unit, with lead actors Sharad Kelkar, Aahana Kumra, Jason Tham, Deepali Pansare and Danish Pandor, shot for three days across various locations like CP, Chandni Chowk, Kamla Nagar market and Delhi University.

We learnt that at many locations, the crew had to resort to shooting with hidden cameras, also known as guerilla shooting, in order to ensure authenticity. Even though makers usually resort to shooting like this when they are shooting without permissions, here the makers did it to get a more ‘realistic’ feel.
“For thrillers, you need to do a lot of candid stuff. The nature of the genre is such. Guerilla shooting happens everywhere. It’s not really related to permissions. It’s also about style. Most of the crime shows have guerilla shooting because we have to be realistic,” producer

Abhimanyu Singh told us.
Singh, who has studied in Delhi, said that the NCR region has to come forward to be the next city after Mumbai for shooting. He added, “I think shooting in Delhi is always nice and a good experience. I think because of the lack of shooting here, you don’t have many trained technicians.
Delhi government should be more welcoming of production here, only then will you see more shooting in the city. Delhi has a lot of people who want to act but end up usually going to Mumbai for opportunities. I think permissions are not that big an issue, but are not east to get. Anywhere in the world, for an organized industry, there is a single-window facility for permissions. Unfortunately, that’s not the case here or any other state , including Mumbai. So, you have to go various departments for permissions, which is really inconvenient.
Also, you have to engage with so many people, so there’s bound to be more corruption. The south has an organized set-up for film and TV industries, but there is no such set-up in the north. In fact, NCR as a region can take a lead on this. Gurgaon can be the centre because of it’s proximity to the airport.
Most international studios prefer to set up base at a place that is close to the airport. This way, travel and communication becomes easier. We are in talks with a network to set up a show in Delhi. Film producers have already made a representation to chief minister Arvind Kejriwal and I think TV producers will also be doing the same.”
