Community feedback wanted

Local communities are being asked to have their say in how they want to see the future of sport and recreation spaces and places used in the region.

Sport Bay of Plenty is leading a review of the sport and recreation spaces and places in the Bay of Plenty region which is due for completion next year.

All six councils in the region are working collaboratively to develop a regional approach providing the strategic framework for the provision of quality facilities which meet regional and community needs now and in the future in a sustainable way.

The review will take into consideration facilities available for sport and recreation current use as well as future requirements, from community halls through to sub-regional and larger regional facilities, as well as the local requirements.

Throughout this project Sport Bay of Plenty project team leader Megan Cleverley along with consulting firm Visitor Solutions, will undertake consultation meetings with regional sporting organisations, clubs and community groups to gather information to feed into the review.

Sport Bay of Plenty chief executive Heidi Lichtwark says the review will help develop a long term strategy for spaces and places for the region. The information gathered will allow decision makers to be strategic in their approach and ensuring the best decisions are made.

Over the past few weeks the Civil Amenities Group has bought several ideas to the table about opportunities for development of the Tauranga CBD and part of this is an idea around the development of a new stadium at the Domain. This stadium would be multi-purpose and cater for a range of sports and outdoor events. The Domain has hosted a variety of events over the past year including ANZAC Day commemorations, Military Tattoo as well as many sporting events. As part of the wider Spaces and Places consultation, feedback will be sought on the idea.

Information on how to provide feedback will be available on Sport Bay of Plenty's website. Feedback will be collected via an online survey as well as Survey Cards which will be available at local libraries, the Sport Bay of Plenty office as well as at various events around the city from today onwards. Today volunteers will be distributing the Survey Cards from 11am to 2.30pm at The Strand and Wharf Street fan zones and well as the Steamers vs Waikato rugby game at the Domain.
