It was a red letter day for the students and teaching and non-teaching staff of the Gulbarga Institute of Medical Sciences on Saturday when new students stepped into the newly constructed college building.

Around 100 students from different parts of the State, who took admission in the college, attended the first day of their medical course with their parents waiting outside.

Principal T.A. Shepur told The Hindu that of the 150 seats, 141, including 16 in the all-India quota, had been filled. The remaining would be filled in the second and third round of counselling for the all-India quota going on now and in the proposed third round of admission to medical colleges scheduled to begin after September 15.

Dr. Shepur said one of the features of the admission to the first year MBBS course was that of the total seats, more than 70 per cent of students were from the Hyderabad Karnataka region. Minister of State for Medical Education Sharanprakash Patil met the parents and students on Friday. He set at rest the apprehensions of the parents about the hostel and mess facilities and security for students.

Dr. Shepur said that the college had more than the required number of teaching staff for the first year MBBS course and for the second and subsequent years, 59 staff would be recruited and direct walk-in interview was now being conducted to fill these posts.

To a question, he said that the Rs. 140.27-crore building had been completed and interior works and furnishing would be completed in three months. A team from the Medical Council of India is likely to visit the college after September to inspect the infrastructure available in the college as part of the admission for 2016-17.
