KARACHI: Pakistan’s Mehmoodul Hussain recorded an important win at the ASBC Asian Boxing Championship as he defeated Mongolia’s Otgonbayar Daivii 3-0 in the second round in Bangkok on Saturday.

The win ensured that Hussain qualified for the quarter-finals of the 91kg event, according to Pakistan Boxing Federation secretary Iqbal Hussain.

Meanwhile, in other matches, Awais Ali Khan defeated Sri Lanka’s Ajith Nevil Gallage 3-0 in the 81kg event, while Qadir Khan lost to Vietnam’s Hai Van Nguyen 3-0 in the 60kg competition.

The Pakistan boxers will need to reach the semi-finals of the competition in their respective weight categories in order to book their place in the AIBA World Championships that will take place in Qatar later this year.

The semi-finalists of the Asian Championship will be able to keep their hopes up for the 2016 Olympics as the World Championships will also serve as the qualifiers for Rio.
