Chandigarh gets its first women police station

UT Adviser Vijay Dev inaugurated the city’s first women police station at Home Guard Building, Sector 17, Saturday.

IGP R P Upadhayay, who was present on the occasion, said that all FIRs related to dowry could be registered directly at this police station. He added that the complaints would be entertained by both men and women police personnel.

Upadhayay further said that although the police station would initially deal with dowry and sexual harassment complaints, the ambit of the police station would later be expanded. Also, the complaints and cases regarding dowry or sexual harassment being handled by the other police stations in city will be shifted to this police station for further investigation.

Inspector Harjit Kaur has been deputed as the Station House Officer (SHO) of the police station. Sufficient staff along with a Gypsy and a Swaraj Mazda truck has been provided to the police station.

On the occasion, the IGP also announced to open an all-women police station in Sector 22, for which land measuring 2,500 sq m has been demarcated by the administration. Upadhayay said the police station would deal with all types of complaints from women. “The building will be completed in a year’s time. Another women police station will be set up in Sector 52,” he said.

He also talked about five more police stations that have been proposed in the areas of IT Park, Maloya, Sector 49, Mauli Jagran and Sarangpur.
