Jamsher villagers reject proposal for waste plant, again

Villagers have reiterated their opposition to a proposed solid waste management plant in a public meeting with senior government officials.

The plant that set to come up in Jamsher village, which is around 15 kilometers from Jalandhar, will produce power from the waste that it receives from the city and its adjoining areas. The team led by S K Sandhu, principal secretary to the chief minister, and other senior bureaucrats including secretary Local Bodies department Ashok Gupta, Chairman Punjab Pollution Control Board MS Chatwal and senior officials from Animal Husbandry department visited the spot.

“On the one hand Jalandhar is being made a Smart City, while on the other hand we, the people of some villages close to which the plant will come up, will not have a place to breathe,” she said.

The leader even threatened self-immolation if the plant came up. SAD MLA Pargat Singh re-iterated that he will not allow the plant to be set up at the present site and asked the team members to understand ground reality.
