While the self-imposed deadline for completing Round I of 25 per cent admissions under the Right to Education Act elapsed August 28, education officials forwarded a proposal to de-recognise 12 city schools for refusing to give RTE quota admissions. Pune Newsline had earlier reported at least five city schools that were recommended for de-recognition by the Pune Municipal Corporation’s education department to the primary education officer at Zilla Parishad, as the latter has the authority under law to take such action against schools.

Though the initial proposal was sent by the PMC education authorities much earlier, Mushtaq Shaikh, ZP primary education officer said he didn’t take any action as he was hoping that the schools will give admissions by the Round I deadline. “When we continued to get complaints from parents and our three-member committee visited these schools and verified the complaints, we decided to send the proposal to the director of education through the deputy director’s office. Now they would take a final decision after hearing the schools,” said Shaikh.

Dhananjay Pardeshi, deputy education officer, PMC said that the list of schools includes Bal Shikshan Mandir, Delhi Public School, Vikhe Patil Memorial School, New India School, two schools of Shikshan Prasarak Mandali, Huzurpaga School, Bhartiya Vidya Bhavan at Shivaji Nagar and BVB’s Paranjape School, Kothrud’s City International School and Abhinav Vidyalaya.
