Wigan Athletic 1-0 Crewe Alexandra

Michael Jacobs
Johnson was part of the Wolves team which won the League One title in 2014

Wigan edged the League One derby against Crewe Alexandra at the DW Stadium thanks to Michael Jacobs' goal.

Jacobs put Athletic ahead early on, rising to head home Max Power's corner from close range.

Crewe were almost level when Bradden Inman's long-range strike hit the inside of the post and bounced out.

Jacobs twice went close, and Will Grigg headed against the post, but it took a fine Donervon Daniels block to deny Bradden Inman an equaliser for Alex.

Wigan manager Gary Caldwell told BBC Radio Manchester:

"Michael Jacobs is an exciting player, I think every game he's played he's shown glimpses of the talent he's got.

"We've asked him to get more goals - I didn't think it would come from his head, it's not the way I could see him scoring goals. He is such a graceful player, he can go off both feet, he carries the ball really well and has been excellent for us.

"We have said that home form is important and it has been great since the start. Now we have to learn how to win away and to put a run of results together."
