Matt Tubbs' late goal ensured Portsmouth kept their unbeaten record in League Two as they recorded a first win at Luton since October 1992.
Gareth Evans hammered Pompey into an early lead after the Hatters defence failed to deal with a cross.
Luton were level through Craig Mackail-Smith's penalty after Josh McQuoid was fouled by Nigel Atangana.
But Tubbs sent Pompey up to fourth in the division as he put away the rebound after Conor Chaplin's shot was saved.
Luton Manager John Still told BBC Three Counties Radio:
"It was a good run, it was a penalty. How your goals come isn't important, it's important you score goals.
"Both teams played well. Different Styles. They want to keep it short and move it around. We like to play a bit faster. Our counter-attack was terrific.
"I'm not downhearted. The last tow games we've looked a touch more like the team I think we are. We're a bit behind on points but not that many."
Portsmouth manager Paul Cook told BBC Radio Solent:
"I didn't think we played well. We weren't happy at half time, we started the game in total control and scored a good goal but then got sloppy.
"At the moment we are lucky enough to have good momentum and long may it continue.
"All in all we are really pleased with the points. But like I say all the time, just move on."
