A book of condolence at Bradford Cathedral opened after the death of the so-called "Bradford Jesus" has now closed with dozens of tributes within.
Geoffrey Brindley, who was about 88 years old, died at Bradford Royal Infirmary following a fall at home.
A cathedral statement said Mr Brindley "impressed" himself upon the city "and we need to reflect on the goodness that he offered to Bradford".
He was born in Buxton, Derbyshire, and the coroner is looking for relatives.
Smiled and waved
Since the 1960s he was regularly seen walking the streets around Bradford wearing a brown robe and sandals.
As he walked he smiled and waved at passers-by.
A website was even designed for people to list sightings of Mr Brindley in the city and to share stories about him.
He died on Monday after a fall at his home in Langley Lane, Baildon.
One written tribute, signed Susan, read: "Thank you for shining your love-filled light wherever you went."
Another, from Katrina, said: "You touched the hearts of thousands and will be remembered with a smile."
It is possible Mr Brindley has relatives living in the Buxton area or elsewhere in the country, said West Yorkshire Police.
Any family members are asked to call the Bradford coroner's office.
