On the morning of Raksha Bandhan, an eight-day-old girl was found abandoned on the steps of a local Dombivali building, sleeping peacefully in a red shawl, when locals raised an alarm and informed the Manpada police.
An first information report (FIR) has now been registered under Section 318, relating to concealment of birth by abandoning the child or disposing off the child’s dead body.
The baby girl was first spotted by local resident Leena Shah at Plot Number RM 59 in MIDC colony, Milap Nagar. According to locals, the baby was placed there early morning and no stranger was spotted in the vicinity.
“I got a call from a local about an abandoned baby. When we reached the spot at 10 am, she was found sleeping on the stairs outside the building,” said Raju Nalawade, a social worker. The baby was then transferred to Janani Ashish Trust’s orphanage home, Dombivali.
According to Nalawade, CCTV footage from a camera placed outside a bungalow opposite the building was taken but no one could be identified with the baby.
Senior Police Inspector with Manpada Police, Gautam Shivram Randive, said, “The investigations are on. We suspect the baby was left behind purposely by her parents.”
Locals described the new born baby as “healthy”. Randive added, “There was no need of medical care and she is temporarily going to stay with the Ashish trust until we identify her family.”
