The raids were conducted to nab people who waved Pakistan and IS flags and displayed posters of Hizbul Mujahideen commander Burhan Wani.

On Saturday, Nowhatta and its adjoining areas in the old city witnessed complete shutdown against the arrest of 10 people. People took to streets and forced shopkeepers to shut shop. Locals alleged that police fired at them, but the SP North Srinagar refused to comment. Police sources said that Ahmad was wanted in many cases of stone pelting.
