THERE WILL BE NO MEDALS, or even finalists, for Barbados at the 15th World Athletics Championships in China.

That’s because the last entrant, Kierre Beckles, failed to make it to the final of the women’s 100-metres hurdles.

Beckles finished fourth in the second semi-final in 12.90 seconds, with Britain’s Tiffany Porter winning the race in 12.62 seconds.

Glory came for the Caribbean, though, in the form of Jamaica’s Danielle Williams, who captured the gold medal in a personal best time of 12.57 seconds.

The upsets continued as Germany’s Cindy Roleder ran a personal best of 12.59 for the silver medal while Belarus’ Alina Talay ran a national record of 12.66 seconds for the bronze medal.

Americans Sharika Nelvis and Brianna Rollins and Great Britain’s Porter, athletes who have dominated this event all year, all had surprisingly bad races. (PG)
