KOLKATA: Pretty soon, rosogollah lovers outside Kolkata will be able to order the traditional syrupy sweet online. At least three of the city’s biggest sweet brands are all set to transcend city limits — both physically and virtually.
KC Das and Banchharam have negotiated this problem with special canning of sweets for online orders. While KC Das’s canned rosogollas are already available on Amazon, it is in the last leg of its tie-up with Flipkart and Snapdeal.
Before the Pujas, canned ‘pantua’ and ‘lalmohon’ will also be available online.
KC Das was the first sweetmeat brand to venture outside Bengal when it started its first shop at Bengaluru 43 years ago. Its success there has enthused the brand to start a shop in Chennai. Delhi, Mumbai and Lucknow are in the pipeline.
“Recently, we were invited by UP chief minister Akhilesh Yadav to start a factory, shop and eatery in Lucknow. While doing his MBA in Bengaluru, he was a regular consumer of luchi-cholar dal and rosogolla at our shop — a fan you can say. That’s why we are taking the plan forward,” said Dhiman Das, executive director of KC Das.
Additonally, the brand has also tied up with big retail chains across the country like More of Aditya Birla Group and B Mart in Mumbai, where canned rosogollas have just started making an appearance. The brand is also collaborating with exporters who have started booking bulk consignments for Dubai, US and Canada.
Banchharam too has tied up with exporters to take its canned products to departmental stores in the US, starting with Washington. This is being facilitated by the US Consulate in the city under the aegis of the country’s embassy in Delhi. Banchharam has just set up two shops in Bengaluru and three more will start operating before the Pujas.

“We thought that since there were many Bengalis in Bengaluru, we could take a chance. Almost overnight, our singara and sandesh became so popular that we could start our second shop within months. We are also going to Pune soon,” said Subhojit Ghosh, spokesperson for Banchharam.
Similarly, Balaram Mullick and Radharaman Mullick is on its way to Mumbai and Delhi and then to New York and London. “Ours will not be a sole proprietorship there, but we will be partnering with NRIs. The shops will carry our brand name and there will be a factory attached, with our own workers following our own recipes. Nothing other than our own sweets will be available there. The NRI partner will just be responsible for running the show,” said owner Sudip Mullick.
