Viola Gwena and Rose Chiruzi are among the 27 students who got scholarships to study in China and are optimistic about their stay there. The two will be studying International law at the university of Political Science and Law in Shangai and will be leaving the country this Monday.

In an interview with the Cool Lifestle reporter Viola and Rose shed more light on the scholarship. “I was a Junior Minister of Foreign Affairs from 2013 and 2014. My participation while in office played a major role in me getting this scholarship,” said Viola.

“I held a function where I donated to the vulnerable in my constituency. The guest was Hon Lazarus Dokora, that’s when I got the recommendation from Hon Mbengegwi to get the scholarship,” Viola said. Viola left her junior parliamentary office last year after she finished her A- Level at Waddilove Mission in Mashonaland East and now she is ready to pursue her studies in China. Viola is the only candidate from the Junior Parliament to get the scholarship because of that affiliation.

“I am the only one from Junior parliament who got this scholarship, others who got it, got it in their own ways and some of them are from the Ministry of Education,” Viola highlighted. Rose explained the process for the other students: “I applied for this scholarship and I am excited that I was accepted. I was told to hand in my O and A-Level results with a recommendation letter from school. I was also told to write an essay about myself and why I am a suitable candidate for the scholarship. It was tough but I am glad I made it,” Rose said.

Viola and Rose will be on a full scholarship, meaning that they will be studying for five years in China while a few will be studying for only four years depending on their programme. “I thank Hon Mbengegwi for recommending for this scholarship and I will sure lift the Zimbabwean flag high while I am in China,” said Viola. The girls said they are optimistic about their future.

“This programme will help us to be vibrant lawyers and also to create business relations between China and Zimbabwe since China has a strong economy,” said the two. Outgoing Chinese Ambassador to Zimbabwe Mr Lin Lin expressed his commitment to opening learning opportunities for Zimbabwean students to study in his country.

“This year we have 27 Chinese government scholarships which is a big increase compared to last year’s number which was 17, this shows China’s commitment to continue promoting education levels in Zimbabwe and we are willing to continue working with Zimbabwe,” he said. “I want to congratulate the winners of the scholarship and I hope you will get closer to our people, learn our culture and the language.

“The Chinese language is widely known as the most difficult language but don’t be discouraged by stereotypes, the language is not that difficult as long as you interact with the Chinese people and you will find out that our people are willing to help you,” said Mr Lin.
