The Dan Wheldon Memorial Pro-Am Karting Challenge announced Friday that the event will be renamed in honor of recently deceased IndyCar driver Justin Wilson, with proceeds also helping the Wilson family. It will now be called the Dan Wheldon Memorial Pro-Am Karting Race Honoring Justin Wilson. The third annual event will be held on Sept. 19 at New Castle Motorsports Park in New Castle, Ind. Wilson, an IndyCar veteran, was an ardent supporter of the karting event and gave freely of his time to honor his friend and fellow racer Dan Wheldon, who also died due to injuries suffered from a racing wreck. “In light of the recent events, we want to honor Justin and his family,” said Wheldon's widow, Susie Wheldon. “Justin was a tremendous support for the event and to me personally, and I think that there is no better way to honor his memory than to pay it forward.” Participants this year will race to raise money for The Dan Wheldon Foundation, Alzheimer’s Association and the Wilson family. The event is open to the public.
